There is a lot to be said about what you can put on your website. This article is not about covering everything that can be on a website. Instead, we focus on some must haves for every website. Now, you can take the ‘every website’ with a grain of salt because we do realise that not every website has to be available in multiple languages. Or not every website requires a live chat. With this article, we want to give you an indication of the most important features that can/should be put on your website. The more you can include, the more user-friendly your site will be

Homepage

The homepage of a website is one of the most important pages. It is usually the primary landing page for direct traffic because the majority of users type in only the domain name and not the full URL. 

A home page should provide information to users. The most important information for them is to make the purpose of the website clear. Furthermore, it should be easy for your visitors to navigate onwards from the homepage, so providing your visitors with the ability to use the website in the most efficient way possible is a must. 

Below, we discuss some of the minimal requirements for a homepage.

Essentially, your logo sums up what your brand stands for. With the right use of colors and a good design, you can make an excellent impression on your customers right from the start.

Here are some things to consider when designing the logo for your website: 

  • Place the logo in the upper left corner of your website. That area is the most visible and immediately attracts attention. It is also where people expect to find the logo.
  • Your logo should always be placed above the text or next to it. 
  • Be sure to place your brand’s slogan below the logo (if your brand has one).
  • Don’t be afraid to change the version of your logo when you include it on other pages of your website (size and location).
  • Don’t place too many images near your logo, as it may distract your visitor.

Multilanguage

Having your website available in multiple languages can be quite helpful. For every language option you add to your website, you increase the number of potential customers

In addition, multilingual websites have an advantage when it comes to SEO. It is easier for search engines to rank for keywords in other languages, bringing more traffic to the website.

There are numerous plugins and translation tools available for websites that simplify the translation process. Personally, we mainly use Weglot and WPML. 

Navigation

Navigation is an extremely important part of your website, but unfortunately, is still often overlooked. 

The main goal regarding navigation is to ensure that your visitors have a smooth and efficient experience while navigating through your website. 

It’s important to keep your structure logical and relevant. Put what your company does clearly in your menu instead of using words such as “services” or “products” and providing detail only when you hover over them. If necessary, use a secondary menu to create space.

The search bar is a basic function of any website. Improving the search function on your site can greatly improve your conversion rates and potentially lead to higher customer satisfaction

The search bar itself is only the beginning of the search process. It is advisable to put helpful text in the box, such as “enter your search” or simply “search.”  Another useful feature that can be worthwhile is autocomplete. By applying the autocomplete feature, you improve the customers’ search experience by making the process easier for them.

Unique value proposition

The Unique Value Proposition answers one question: how does your solution contribute to solving problems or fulfilling needs of your ideal customer and why would he/she buy it from you? In other words, in what way does a potential customer benefit from your product or service? Your value proposition is basically unique, and cannot be copied. 

It includes 3 things: 

  • definition of your offering (content);
  • that fits your target audience (ideal customer);
  • and stands out from the competition.

Call to actions (CTAs)

A call to action (CTA) is an image or text that asks a website visitor to perform a certain action. The “action” you want the user to take can be anything: signing up for a newsletter, requesting a quote or ordering a product. Therefore, CTAs are often buttons and have clear, short text such as “Order now,” “Read more,” or “Contact us.”

Visitors often look for CTA buttons, hoping to learn more about what is the next step they should take. CTAs are necessary to convert visitors into prospects and/or customers

Subscribe to a newsletter

Newsletters allow you to keep your customers informed about company-wide updates, promote your new products and provide them with additional information. You can use the newsletter to share tips and suggestions with your customers, along with personalized product recommendations. It will enhance your customers’ overall experience and improve your relationship with your customers.

Newsletters are something that can be of high value. Your customers already subscribe to a bunch of newsletters so you need to give them a reason to subscribe to yours. For example, an e-commerce platform often offers a 10% discount when subscribing to their newsletter. Of course, it’s then up to you to keep your newsletters interesting enough to stay subscribed (and read, obviously). 

Usually the newsletter subscription form or field is placed either at the top of the website or at the bottom, also known as the footer. One general rule is that the less information you ask of your visitors, the more likely they are to subscribe. The best case scenario here is only asking for the e-mail address.

About us page

About us pages are very popular and are often amongst the most visited pages of a website. Nowadays, customers don’t just care about your products and services. They want to know who is behind the brand and what the company stands for.

Moreover, pages that talk about your company help you show your customers why you are unique. It is a perfect opportunity to stand out among your competitors. 

Additionally, if visitors have experienced similar situations, they will often connect with you and immediately feel more attracted to your brand story.

Finally, the about us page reinforces your brand image. It’s a great way to state exactly what your brand is and what you want it to look like.

FAQ page

An FAQ page is a page that answers customers’ most frequently asked questions.

By answering the questions in advance and relieving your customers of some of their most common concerns, you can greatly increase your customers’ satisfaction and the trust they place in your company. Reducing the number of customer questions and complaints is also one of the benefits of having an FAQ page. 

In addition, it improves the SEO of your website. Questions and answers on FAQ pages are quite specific and tend to be really popular among customers. If you answer all these questions, you have a chance to improve your website’s visibility on the search engine results page.

Privacy policy & general terms and conditions

The general terms & conditions and privacy policy are the essential components of any website (and not just for e-commerce websites). 

  • It prevents abuse, such as spamming, posting defamatory content or infecting your website with malware.
  • It acknowledges you as the owner of your content.
  • It informs customers that fake accounts will be terminated.
  • A privacy policy is required by law if you collect personal information from users.
  • It is required by third-party service providers you may or may not use.
  • Users care about their privacy, especially when it comes to online shopping.

Live chat

Live chat is an efficient communication tool between you and your customers. By implementing it, you enable your customers (and you too) to engage in a live chat during their website visit. That way, you can resolve a number of customer questions in real time.Live chat is one of the most successful customer service channels. It has the highest satisfaction rate compared to all other service channels – 73%, followed by email at 63%.

Setting up a contact page on your website is pretty standard. You want your potential customers to be able to reach you for questions, quotes, etc. 

Different people prefer different contact channels. While the typical online contact form might be ideal for one person, another might prefer picking up the phone and calling you or reaching out through social media such as WhatsApp or Facebook. The more contact options you offer, the more likely it is that someone will feel comfortable reaching out to you

Breadcrumb navigation

The main purpose of breadcrumb navigation is to help users navigate seamlessly through the website, both back and forth

The previous web pages that the customer visited should be visible based on a hierarchy of your pages. That way, customers immediately know where they are now and how they got there

Breadcrumb navigation is usually displayed at the top of the page. If you display it, always start with the home page. It represents the beginning of your customers’ journey. But don’t display it on the homepage – that just doesn’t make sense.

It is important to exude professionalism and trust to be successful online, whether your website is for sales purposes or lead generation.

Confidence signals create a sense of trust and security for your visitor when considering your product or service. Examples: 

  • Your logo: make it visible on every page. 
  • Testimonials
  • SSL certificates

Did you know that a third of consumers doubt the security of their purchase while shopping online? So for e-commerce businesses, it’s important to pay attention to the following:

  • Payment Gateway visibility. Make these logos clearly visible on your website. Both on the home and checkout page.
